1. What is a defibrillator?
Most heart attacks are caused by an electrical malfunction of the heart, causing a "fibrillation” or uncontrolled movement of the heart muscle. An electric shock is the only way to restore the heart to normal operation. A defibrillator is a device used to stop heart fibrillation by delivering an electric shock. Automatic or semi-automatic external defibrillators (AED) were developed to be used by anyone. They are very easy to use, they provide a voiced help to its user and automatically calculate the intensity of shock needed. An AED is a portable and lightweight device of the size of a small bag. In case of Hart Attack, every minute that passes reduces the chances of survival. So early intervention is vital. Usually, after a heart attack, long minutes pass before emergency services can be contacted and can reach the scene. An AED can help saving time. Associated to cardiac massage, it could save thousands of lives each year if widespread.
2. How many people are victims of cardiac arrest each year in France?
Each year, Hart attacks happening out of a hospital environments are responsible of nearly 40 000 deaths in France (about 110 per day). According to the Inserm, early intervention with defibrillator could save thousands of lives each year.
3. Can everyone use a defibrillator? Even young person?
Since the 4 May 2007 decree (Decree No. 2007-705 amending the Public Health Code about the use of AEDs by non-professional people) each citizen is allowed to use a defibrillator or external semi-automatic devices.
4. How can I help the association?
By making donations and relaying the association’s messages. As member of a company’s board or as Manager, you can sign the Engagement Chart of the Association to support the global deployment and widespread use of defibrillators (attached to your professionnal site).
5. What is the average cost of a defibrillator?
The average cost of a defibrillator is approximately 1 500 Euros
6. Is it necessary to be trained to use a defibrillator?
The use of the defibrillator is in addition to training for lifesaving behaves. You can check with your local council to look for structures that provide these courses.
7. How can I be helped in financing the installation of defibrillators?
In 2007, the Ministry of Health has released 2 million euros to develop the installation of defibrillators in the sports structures. The aid is granted on the basis of co-financing with cities. All action that promotes the use of defibrillator in cities is a good way to help the association in gathering funds.
